Welcome, intrepid adventurers, to the thrilling world of murder mystery games, where mysteries unfold, secrets lurk, and the stage is set for an unforgettable experience! Here is a general guide on how to play a murder mystery game:

1. Set up the Murder Mystery Game:

  • Choose a murder mystery game script that suits your preferences and group size, whether it's a classic whodunit, a historical drama, or a mind-bending supernatural thriller. The options are as vast as the stars in the night sky, each offering a unique tale to unravel.

  • For table top games, distribute character cards to each participant, which include their role, objectives, and relationships with other characters. Provide clue cards or other game components that contain information relevant to the mystery.

  • For facilitated games, the game host will lead you into the game experience by providing you the relevant character script or costume dress-up.

2. Familiarize Yourself with the Game Characters:

  • Read and understand your character card/script thoroughly, including your backstory, motivations, and any special abilities or knowledge. You might become a charismatic detective with a knack for deduction, a suspicious suspect with a hidden agenda, or even a bewildered witness caught in the crossfire. Immerse yourself in the character, donning their persona like a finely tailored suit, and get ready to bring them to life.

Helpful hint: Take note of your character's relationships with other characters, as these interactions will be crucial to uncovering clues.

3. Begin the Murder Investigation:

  • As the game begins, you'll find yourself in a world of intrigue, surrounded by fellow players who harbor their own secrets and motivations.

  • Engage in conversations and interactions with other players in character. You can use scripted dialogues provided in the game or improvise based on your character's personality and objectives.

  • Exchange information, ask questions, and observe the behavior of others to gather clues that may point to the identity of the murderer.

Helpful hint: Trust NO ONE and question everything, for the truth is shrouded in a labyrinth of deception.

4. Gather and Analyze Clues:

  • Pay attention to clue cards or information shared by the game moderator. These can include witness statements, crime scene evidence, or hidden clues.

  • Share and discuss clues with other players to piece together the puzzle. Collaborate, but also be wary of potential misinformation or red herrings

Helpful hint: Don't forget your missions/objectives! Some characters have dedicated missions in the development of the storyline. Sometimes, the objectives may be conflicting because it is up to the player's ability to maneuver within these tight objectives without trading off any of them.

Helpful hint: Manage the amount of information you want to share. Over-sharing to protect your innocence might render your secondary objectives unfulfilled. Under-sharing may cast unnecessary suspicion on your character instead. If you are playing the murderer role, refer to this article to learn what not to do as the culprit player!

5. Deduction and Accusation:

  • Based on the clues and interactions, analyze the evidence, connect the dots formulate your theory on who the murderer might be.

  • When you feel confident in your deduction, present your accusation to the group or game moderator, explaining your reasoning and presenting evidence if applicable.

Helpful hint: A wholesome theory consider minimally these 3 aspects of each suspect: Motive, Method and Weapon. Refer to this article when we dive deeper into the useful guide in formulating an iron-proof deduction theory!

Random thought: If you do not have a concrete theory, it is time to trust your instincts, but question even your most trusted allies!

6. Reveal the Solution:

  • But remember, in this world of intrigue, the line between truth and deceit is a precarious one.

  • Once all accusations are made, the game moderator or a predetermined mechanism will reveal the true identity of the murderer.

  • Discuss and debrief the game, highlighting key moments, strategies, and surprises.

The stage is set, the secrets await, and the game is about to begin. Are you ready to take your place in this extraordinary tale?
